Las Cruces High School

Add to plan Remove from plan

Built: 1925.
Other name(s): Las Cruces Union High School /
Alameda Junior High School / Third Judicial District Court.
Historic use: Educational. Current use: Governmental.
Architectural Style: Spanish Colonial Revival/Renaissance Revival.
This two-story, very large building in the corner of Alameda Boulevard and Picacho street is a sample of the Spanish Colonial Revival style in Las Cruces. The large red brick structure is vertically divided by exposed columns with white cast-cement pedestals working as buttresses, and a white cast-cement trim over the upper level windows.
The majestic entrance projects from the building and it is framed by solomonic twisted Corinthian columns on the sides of two semicircular arches and over a four-step staircase. Over the columns it is possible to appreciate all the common classical architecture elements: architrave, entablature, frieze (with the school name carved in bas relief) and a cornice with dentil molding. Three arched windows complete the upper part of the façade.
